Colonel James Ferguson of Kirkmichael or Kirktonhill (i.e.
Balmakelly), as a Commissioner for Kincardineshire in 1696 and 1698, his son
returning to Aberdeenshire about 1723. [Records of the Clan, p. 22]
Mr James Ferguson, proprietor of Altens, (which property he
purchased only two years ago,) has improved sixty acres of waste lands, and
built new dwelling-houses, covered with slate, and new steadings to his

1927 northern "officer for SHANGHAI. Captain J. F. Ferguson. One of
the General Staff Officers appointed by the War Office to the Shanghai Defence
Force is Captain J. F. Ferguson, son of the late Surgeon-Major J. E. Ferguson,
who resided at 21 Desswoou Place, Aberdeen. Captain Ferguson, whose regiment is
the Durham Light Infantry, was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School from
1904-1909. He became second lieutenant in the Dur 1912, being promoted
lieutenant on mobilisation. He served on the Indian frontier until the autumn
of 1917, and fought in Mesopotamia from September, 1917, to January, 1918.
Proceeding to Palestine in April, 1918, he was wounded and taken prisoner
during operations there.- He became captain and adjutant in November, 1919.
During last year Captain Ferguson passed with distinction his Staff College
examination. Captain Ferguson's father was the son of the late Dr John
Ferguson, M.D., Nigg, Kincardineshire. also was educated at Aberdeen Grammar
School. Graduating M.8., C.M., 1873, he joined the Indian Medical Service two
years later, retired surgeon-major in 1593, and died at Aberdeen in October,
1904. Captain Ferguson 's grandfather was the late Colonel Hunter, C.8.,
