- FERGUSON, HENRY GASPARD DE LAVALETTE, Captain, was the son of
Major General C Johnston-Ferguson. He joined the 4th (Militia) Battalion
Norfolk Regiment, and served in Sierra Leone, 1898-99, taking part in the
Mendiland Protectorate Expeditions. He was slightly wounded; mentioned in
Despatches [London Gazette, 29 December 1899], and created a Companion of the
Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 9 January 1900]: "Henry Gaspard de
Lavalette Ferguson, Captain, 4th (Militia) Battalion Norfolk Regiment. In
recognition of services whilst employed in Sierra Leone". The Insignia, Warrant
and Statutes were sent to Captain Ferguson at home. He served in South Africa,
1900-2, as Assistant Provost-Marshal, Lines of Communication (received the
Queen's Medal with three clasps, and the King's Medal with two clasps. Major
Ferguson retired 13 July 1901, and joined the Reserve officers. He served in
the European War from 1914 to 1918; was given the Brevet of Lieutenant Colonel;
became Lieutenant Colonel, and was awarded a Bar to the Distinguished Service
Order. His favourite recreations were racing, polo, hunting and big game
