Believe there is also a family connection to a Capt Robert Bruin FERGUSON, who was born in Greenock, Scotland in 1855, immigrated to Philadelphia around 1863 and around 1870 he went to sea, eventually rising to become a ships master, he sailed before the mast in various jobs Harpooner on Whale Boats, First Mate on many schooners and other cargo vessels etc. We have, within the family, copies of many of his seagoing diaries. Two of his diaries (covering his whaling years) were printed by the University of Pennsylvania in 1929 and we have original versions of those, however whether he was an uncle or cousin or what is still unclear. an inscription in one of the original published diaries seems to indicate he was the brother of my great great grandfather William.
