Ancestors of Ian Duncan Ferguson

dna
I am a direct descendent of Archibald Ferguson born c1756 on the Glenbranter estate near Strachur on the south side of Lock Fyne Argyllshire. Archibald emigrated to Montreal Canada in c1820 with at least two of his sons, Archibald and David. I have so far traced two more generations who were coopers in Montreal. One of Archibald's sons' John, remained in Scotland and I am descended from John.
Archibald had brothers Dougald, David, John, Niven and a sister Janet. Dougald emigrated to America on 18th September, 1783 and settled on Bent Creek Appomattox /Buckingham county. He went on to be a magistrate for nearly 30 years and married into the Archer dynasty. With his cousin John he owned at one stage 1200 acres of tobacco plantation. I have managed to find a 'cousin' from Dougald's daughter Francis Anna Ferguson (1791-1845) who married William Stevens and we are in touch. I also have a descendent tree for his son David Henry Ferguson ( 1801-1875) to the present day but I have not personally verified this information.
During my research some of which I did on the ground in Virginia it became clear that it is very difficult for Americans to positively make the connection back to Scotland. I have copies of letters which do just that for Dougald and Archibald and I am hoping that by joining the DNA project we will be able to make many more positive links.
From the UK point of view unless you were wealthy there are few records pre 18th century and DNA will enable some myths to be settled and new links to be identified.
