Charles Ferguson is the mystery in the Ferguson family. Oral history has said he was from Arkansas. He is said to have been an oil field carpenter who died when he fell off an oil derrick he was constructing. Since Jesse lived with her sister, May (Ollie May), and her husband, Jack Baker, for years even when pregnant and having her only two children (Floyd and Bill) there are no census records to be found so far with them listed as a family. The records that have been located (1920 census, Gustine, Texas, have Jessie and Floyd listed as "Ferguson" and part of the Jack and May Baker household). It was suggested by Frank Baker, son of Jack & May, that the railroad for which Jack Baker worked provided better living quarters than transient oil field workers could find. One letter of recollections written by Bill Ferguson to his daughter, Mary, indicated that a family friend (O'Mary) made a remark to another neighbor about how the boys father had died which Bill overheard. It gave Bill the impression that Mr. O'Mary may have known him. Neither of the boys knew or remember their father. Bill would share what he knew of him when asked. Floyd refused to talk about him at all. Connie Ferguson as a young adult asked her grandmother, Jessie, to tell her about Charles Ferguson. Jessie became emotional and left the room saying, "you're better off not knowing him," or something to that effect. We have very little to go on but are in hopes we will find some record of death or marriage in Texas one day. Much speculation surrounds this mysterious person, hopefully, we'll find the answer one day. Bill also believes Charles/Charlie's brother went to get the body and take it "home." It is unclear whether home was in Texas, Oklahoma, or Arkansas. [Connie Dampman Ferguson
