My earliest documented Ferguson ancestor is Toliver Ferguson. At the present time, nothing is known of Toliver's parents or siblings, nor of his actual place and date of birth-his life before 1821 a complete mystery. Other than speculation about the 1830 census, this Toliver Ferguson cannot be found on a census record.
The first record of Toliver Ferguson is found in Rutherford Co, TN when he married Catherine Winters on 5 October 1821. A Tennessee "Legislative Petition of 1823" (p. 141), requesting a change in the Rutherford and Bedford county line (that certain sections be attached to Bedford Co) is signed by an "F. Oliver Ferguson" (so the typed copy indicates). There is no proof that the signee is indeed Toliver Ferguson, but it is presumed and that he and Catherine are living in Bedford Co. The 1830 Hardin Co, TN census lists a "Tolifer/Tobias" Ferguson as head of household. The enumeration listed could very well match the household of Toliver and Catherine at this time. But this cannot be documented.
Between 1836-1837, Toliver Ferguson left his family in TN for Texas. An entry in "First Settlers of Matagorda County, Texas" by Gifford White notes in August of 1839 Toliver Ferguson received a 2nd Class Certificate of 640 acres in Brazoria District, Matagorda Co, TX (2nd Class Certificates were issued to those arriving after March 2, 1836 but before October 1, 1837 and were conditional in that the principal continued residency for 3 years).
Toliver Furguson (sp) married Rebecca Jane Clark on November 7, 1839 in Matagorda Co, TX (recorded in Book A, p.10) and had children-Clark Furguson (sp) was born in 1839 in Goliad Co, TX. Toliver died sometime prior to October 1843 (Probate Book A, Entry #134) from wounds he received in March of 1843.
Catherine Winters Ferguson and her children are first found on the 1840 census living in Davidson Co, TN: Mansfield (b 1824), Anderson (b abt 1826), Sarah Elizabeth (b 1829), Caroline Eliza (b btwn 1830-1832), Mary Ann ( b btwn 1830-1832), John R. (b 1835), James B. (b 1839) and Wilbern b 1840. Catherine Winters died after the 1860 census, her children continued to live in Davidson Co, TN, near Joelton.
I descend from the line of Mansfield Ferguson who married Melvina Amanda McCullough on March 17, 1842 in Wilson Co, TN.
