Haplogroup R1b is discussed in a Wikipedia article. Ferguson in the Scotland to Virginia group are advised to join the R DF21 and Subclades Project.

The clade is characterized by DYS 390=23, DYS439=11, DYS437 =16, DYS570=16, DYS442=13 and DYS438=13 which we label as the Scotland to Virginia Modal Haplotype. The FERGUSON for the most part can be subdivided into two branches; those with DYS448=19 and those with DYS448=20. A family of BRUCE also falls within this clade. The FERGUSON are DYS458=16 or 17 whereas Group A in the BRUCE DNA Project are DYS458=15.

SNP Testing

Kit N118237 has done extensive testing to determine his terminal SNP is S971+, S7858+. This is a particularly interesting result because heretofore every incidence of S971+ also had a null value at DYS425, the Scotland to Virginia Ferguson have DYS425=12. Three Ferguson have done Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) tests and the results are summarized in the Big Tree. From the NGS testing three sets of SNP are available for testing from YSEQ as depicted in blocks labeled Scots, Virginia and Irish. The labels are based on the earliest known ancestors of the persons tested and are not intended to imply anything about origins earlier than circa 1700-1800.

The three SNP in the Virginia block are ancestral, i.e. negative, in the Branch II kit 47475 but derived, i.e. positive in the Branch II kit 12950. Thus at minimum we can differentiate persons in Branches I and II who are ancestral for FGC33481, FGC33488 and FGC33489 versus those who are derived, i.e. positive, for those three SNP. In addition as more people test we may find other combinations of ancestral and derived SNP within the set allowing for further subdivision. The practical result is that we can sort common ancestors of the different subdivisions in reverse chronological order.

A modal haplotype is the set of markers corresponding to the most frequently observed values for each marker. The markers highlighted are said to be off modal and patterns in these markers distinguish one branch or family from another.

Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor

The Time To Most Recent Ancestor (TMRCA) is a measure of relatedness and well defined in the case of a family tree wherein one simply counts the number of generations back to the most recent common ancestor shared with someone else in the tree. From differences in haplotypes between two men it is possible to make a rough estimate of the probability that the TMRCA falls between two numbers. The numbers reported in the table below are such that the TMRCA is expected to fall within the range shown with a probability of 90%.

Network Diagram

A network diagram connects different haplotypes in accordance with specific marker values. Any line that connects two haplotypes represent mutations in the markers that differ between the two and its length is the genetic distance. Where lines intersect at intermediate points between haplotypes an attempt has been made to account for missing haplotypes in the data set. Related Surnames

Kit 193205 - KIDD falls within Branch I of this clade. One thing that makes this match of general interest is that the Clan Fergusson Society of North America includes KIDD as a Sept name but nobody can say why this is so. There could then be three reasons for this KIDD match to the FERGUSON: 1. the Sept name connection, 2. a non-paternal event or 3. a common ancestor before surnames took hold. We have a clue these FERGUSON may originate in Aberdeenshire and thus so too may these KIDD.

This same clade appears in the BRUCE DNA Project as Group A. Their modal differs from the FERGUSON at DYS459=15 vs 16. The interclade age between the Ferguson in Branch I and the Bruce in their Group A is estimated to be 20± 3.5 generations.
