Pairwise Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor

The Time To Most Recent Ancestor (TMRCA) is a measure of relatedness and well defined in the case of a family tree wherein one simply counts the number of generations back to the most recent common ancestor shared with someone else in the tree. From differences in haplotypes between two men it is possible to make a rough estimate of the probability that the TMRCA falls between two numbers. The numbers reported in the table below are such that the TMRCA is expected to fall within the range shown with a probability of 90%.

Branch Age

The table of genetic distances shows that everybody is closely related to one another. This is the hall mark of the Founder Effect, i.e. the loss of genetic variation that occurs when a new population is established by a very small number of individuals from a larger population. [Wikipedia, 2014]

The Time to the Most Recent Ancestor shared by everyone in the branch can be estimated using the variance method of Nordtvedt . The results vary from 8 to 10 generations depending on the data set. This is nearly coincident with the earliest known ancestor of all involved, i.e. John Ferguson who was in Virginia no later than 1684 and married Ann Stubbleson soon thereafter. He is 9 generations back from the present. Does this mean everybody in the branch descends from John and Ann?

The most probable answer is yes but the confidence limits are too broad to be sure. If John had an uncle who immigrated with him the common ancestor they share is two generations further back and 11 generations still falls within G ± Sigma. In time we may be able to associated a particular SNP with John's descendants and provide a more definitive answer to the question. Such SNP are being discovered by tests such as BigY
