This is a clade researched by Lancaster et al who refer to the group as their Scottish Ancestor "MacWho?". The match of FERGUSON, FURRY, FERGUS and FERGIE provides a extraordinary case study on the origin of the surname.

SNP Tests

Through coordinated efforts in the R-L21 MacWho Project it is known that the MacWho are DF13 > MC14 in the ISOGG 2014 tree. The MacWho who have tested BigY are compared at The Big Tree. Of the three branches shown in that diagram the Fergus(s)on are believed to be in the branch with Muny and Furry. Accordingly the MacWho Fergus(s)on are advised to test the corresponding SNP available as A5381 and A5383 at ySeq.net

Genetic Distance

Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor

The Time To Most Recent Ancestor (TMRCA) is a measure of relatedness and well defined in the case of a family tree wherein one simply counts the number of generations back to the most recent common ancestor shared with someone else in the tree. From differences in haplotypes between two men it is possible to make a rough estimate of the probability that the TMRCA falls between two numbers. The numbers reported in the table below are such that the TMRCA is expected to fall within the range shown with a probability of 90%.
