Fergus(s)on DNA Project

Haplogroup R1b - Clade: M-222

The R-M222 clade emerged in 2006 in a study by researchers at Trinity College in Dublin and caught the attention of the genetic genealogy community because it appears to be heavily populated by descendants of the Uí Néill who dominated Ireland from the 6th century to the 10th century. The Uí Néill are epitomized by the interesting character "Niall of the Nine Hostages" and their genealogies contain tantalizing names such as Nial's son "Fergus Cáechán" or his grandson "Fergusa cennfhoda". The genealogy of the Uí Néill is a subject unto itself and the topic of many a discussion on the R-M222 mailing list; see:M222 Project. Persons in this clade are advised to join the R-M222 Haplogroup Project.

Branches

Branch I: DYS385=12,12; DYS389=13,30; DYS460=12; DYS607=17. The only person in this branch who can state a place of origin outside the colonies lists a Matt FERGUSON b. 1824 in Knockbride, county Cavan, Ireland.
The table below shows some of the off-modal markers that are shared by more than one person. Those that mutate fast may have mutated more than once on independent occassions and do not necessarily mean that everybody who shares that particular value are of the same branch. Those that mutate slow are more likely to indicate a common branch.

Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor

The Time To Most Recent Ancestor (TMRCA) is a measure of relatedness and well defined in the case of a family tree wherein one simply counts the number of generations back to the most recent common ancestor shared with someone else in the tree. From differences in haplotypes between two men it is possible to make a rough estimate of the probability that the TMRCA falls between two numbers. The numbers reported in the table below are such that the TMRCA will be less than the number shown with a probability of 95%.

Network Diagram

A network diagram connects different haplotypes in accordance with specific marker values. Any line that connects two haplotypes represent muations in the markers that differ between the two and its length is the genetic distance. Where lines intersect at intermediate points between haplotypes an attempt has been made to account for missing haplotypes in the data set. Subclades or branches appear in these diagrams when haplotypes with similiar marker values are clustered together. The diagram below was constructed using Fluxus software and the reduce median method followed by the median joining method.

The diagram has been rooted to the R-M222 modal haplotype and rearranged to resemble a tree preserving branch lengths and nodes connected so as to minimize the total number of mutations in the diagram.

Phylogenetic Tree

A phylogenetic tree is a diagram wherein haplotypes are connected together such that length of the shortest path between any two persons in the diagram is proportional to their TMRCA. Subclades or branches appear in these diagrams when haplotypes are clustered together. The tree is a screening tool and any branch that appears needs definition in terms of a common set of markers that differentiate it from other haplotypes in the clade.
