Haplogroup I-M223 is described in a Wikipedia Article and persons therein are advised to join the I2b1/M223 Y-CLAN STUDY. The clade is as defined by Nordtvedt and the defining markers are on the page: Modal Haplotypes for Nordtvedt's Clusters. A study of the genesis and spread of Halopgroup I and its clades is on this page: Nordtvedt's Haplogroup I Tree and Conjectured Spread Map.
The origin of the FERGUSON within this clade is complicated by matches with persons named GRIFFIN. There is little doubt that a non-paternal event has occured in either the GRIFFIN or the FERGUSON line. From the Griffi(th)(s)(n)(ng) surname project, comparisons are included for those GRIFFIN of this Haplogroup who have been tested to 67 markers or better. Both these FERGUSON and the GRIFFIN have ancestors in colonial New York. The GRIFFIN are known to have emigrated from England. Detailed analysis has been able to rule out any NPE in the Griffin line subseqent to a Richard GRIFFIN 1655, NY and in the Ferguson line subsequent to John W. FERGUSON 1859, NJ
Alan Fletcher Ferguson and a Griffin (kit 48274) match at 109 of 111 markers. FTDNA's guideline reads: "A 109/111 match indicates a close relationship. Most matches are 7th cousins or closer, and over half are 4th or more recent cousins"
A modal haplotype is the set of markers corresponding to the most frequently observed values for each marker. The markers highlighted are said to be off modal and patterns in these markers distinguish one branch or family from another.
The M223-Root1 haplotype in the table below is from: Modal Haplotypes for Nordtvedt's Clusters. The color coded marker labels are the key markers defining the clade.

Genetic distance is a measure of the differences between two haplotypes. In its simplest form one simply counts the number of markers that differ. The model used is known as the Hybrid Mutation Model and conforms to that used by Family Tree DNA.

The Time To Most Recent Ancestor (TMRCA) is a measure of relatedness and well defined in the case of a family tree wherein one simply counts the number of generations back to the most recent common ancestor shared with someone else in the tree. From differences in haplotypes between two men it is possible to make a rough estimate of the probability that the TMRCA falls between two numbers. The numbers reported in the table below are such that the TMRCA will be less than the number shown with a probability of 95%.
