Attempts were made at constructing phylogenetic diagrams on the above data set subject to different assumptions. It appears that the number of testers involved is too small to yield to cluster analysis despite the large number of STR for any one tester. However, one problem is that the STR from the NGS tests are not as accurate as those from the Sanger tests in the FTDNA panels. Until such time that the reliable STR and their mutations rates can be discerned quantitive analysis will have to wait. At present the best one can do is construct a diagram that fits the facts as they are known but it is more of an artists rendering than a unique mathematical solution. Such a diagram is shown below and it illustrates the time scales involved relative to the known pedigrees. None of the subclades are young enough to see an SNP the splits familial lines.

Phylo

Assuming an average mutation rate of 0.002 mutations per generation, a variance computation on the above set of data yielded a coalescence age of 17.3 with a confidence interval of ± 6.0 generations. Those numbers may be compared to the TMRCA of 800 ybp (years before present) for I-BY3819 in the yFull tree. YFULL assumes 31.5 years per generation and that testers were born in 1940, 800 ybp then equates to 23.5 generations. The confidence interval is 500 to 1100 ybp or 14 to 33 generations.

Haplotype Table

A modal haplotype is the set of markers corresponding to the most frequently observed values for each marker. The markers highlighted are said to be off modal and patterns in these markers distinguish one branch or family from another.

Pairwise Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor

The Time To Most Recent Ancestor (TMRCA) is a measure of relatedness and well defined in the case of a family tree wherein one simply counts the number of generations back to the most recent common ancestor shared with someone else in the tree. From differences in haplotypes between two men it is possible to make a rough estimate of the probability that the TMRCA falls between two numbers. The numbers reported in the table below are such that the TMRCA is expected to fall within the range shown with a probability of 90%.

Group TMRCA

The TMRCA of the 6 haplotypes is estimated to be 850 years before present. YFULL assumes the average age of a testor is 60 and that there are 31.5 years per generation in a family tree. The TMRCA expressed in generations is then TMRCA = (850-60)/31.5 = 25 generations. The 5% to 95% confidence interval is 12 to 36.

The TMRCA of the group can be estimated independently using the variance method of Nordtvedt. For the same set of six 37 marker haplotypes the TMRCA is 17 ± 13 (two sigma). The 5% to 95% confidence interval is 4 to 30

Network Diagram

A network diagram connects different haplotypes in accordance with specific marker values. Any line that connects two haplotypes represent mutations in the markers that differ between the two and its length is the genetic distance. Where lines intersect at intermediate points between haplotypes, median vectors, an attempt has been made to account for missing haplotypes in the data set. Subclades or branches appear in these diagrams when haplotypes with similiar marker values are clustered together. The diagram below was constructed using Fluxus software and the reduced median method followed by median joining method. The markers are weighted by the inverse square root of the mutation rate. The computations require that all haplotypes have the same set of markers and thus the only persons with 67 markers are shown.
