This haplogroup is described in a Wikipedia article.

Haplogroup E-V13 is an interesting bunch. To date none of of the participants can state from where their immigrant ancestor came. Further E-V13 does not fit within any of the traditional origins of the surname FERGUS(S)ON. A map showing the distribution of E-V13 in Europe shows that E1b is rare in Scotland and Ireland. Steven Bird has written a paper suggesting that the E-V13 haplotypes found in Britain are due to soldiers of Balkan origin settling the area after the invasion of Britain by the Roman military in CE 43.

The origin of these FERGUSON is further complicated by matches with persons named JOHNSON. It appears that a non-paternal event (NPE) has occured in either the JOHNSON or the FERGUSON line.

The blank at DYS425 is common to this group. It indicates that the lab reported a null value or no result for this marker. All cases of this nature are retested multiple times by the lab to confirm their accuracy. There are E-V13 Johnson is the SMGF database where DYS464b=15.3. A number such as this called a partial repeat and would be rounded to 16 in the FTDNA database. The E-V13 Ferguson and Johnson are probably all DYS464b=15.3

Genetic distance is a measure of the differences between two haplotypes. In its simplest form one simply counts the number of markers that differ. The model used is known as the Hybrid Mutation Model and conforms to that used by Family Tree DNA.

Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor

The Time To Most Recent Ancestor (TMRCA) is a measure of relatedness and well defined in the case of a family tree wherein one simply counts the number of generations back to the most recent common ancestor shared with someone else in the tree. From differences in haplotypes between two men it is possible to make a rough estimate of the probability that the TMRCA falls between two numbers. The numbers reported in the table below are such that the TMRCA is expected to fall within the range shown with a probability of 90%.
