The diagram above assumes that DYS576=18 is the ancestral haplotype, i.e. that of William b. 1754/1764. The ancestral haplotype was chosen in accordance with principles laid out Robb. The marker would then have to mutate once on the path to John Wesley. It would also have to mutate once as a two step mutation or twice as a single step mutation on the path to Tony Lee.
Alternative scenarios have been considered using DYS576=19 and 20 as the ancestral haplotype. Even though we cannot be sure of the ancestral haplotype all three scenarios are reasonable and thus there is no reason to say the observed mutations are at odds with the genealogy.
