Notes for John Fergusson:

John Fergusson  was born 1789 in Balquidder, Perthshire, Scotland, and died January 14, 1866 in Montague, Lanark Co. He married (1) Mary McIntyre 1809 in Strathyre, Perthshire, Scotland. He married (2) Margaret McNee December 30, 1826 in Balquidder, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John McNee and Margaret McLaren. They were in Lanark County presumably for Thomas' birth on June 30, 1831, at least for his baptism on Feb. 20 1832.  IGI index shows Kip of Strathyre, film LDS # 184270 p.514 Ref. 15047 John Fergusson was married to Mary McIntye abt 1809 in Perth Scotland, file # 458535. Mary died abt 1818. Strathyre is a part of Perth with Strathern in the north west part. They had five sons, Colin, John, Colin, Duncan, and Robert. IGI records show: Colin Ferguson,Parish of Balquider, Perthshire, Scotland LDS Film # 0993518,  February 2, 1810 John Ferguson and Spouse Mary McIntyre in the village of Strathyre had a child baptised and named Colin .. this Colin died before 1814 but death records were not found.

Perth, Scotland, Sons (all christened in Strathyre)

1. Colin Ferguson  b. 2 Feb 1810- died young            2. John Ferguson b.  26 Nov 1811

3. Colin Ferguson  1 Jan 1814,                               4. Duncan Ferguson 13 Jan 1816.

Strathern appears to be a general area west of Perth and Strathyre seems to be part of that area.

Note: There is no Fifteenthly mentioned in the WILL. The sons receiving one pound are the elder sons, two from his first marriage and Thomas the eldest from the second marriage no doubt have already received their land allotment. Sons Colin b. 1814 and Robert b.1818 are missing so it is presumed they are dead by 1864. Children of John Fergusson and Mary McIntyre are:

2             i.   Colin3 Fergusson, born February 02, 1810 in Perthshire, Scotland; died Bef. 1814 in Perthshire, Scotland.

Notes for Colin Fergusson:

Colin Ferguson, Parish of Balquider, Perthshire, Scotland LDS Film # 0993518, February 2nd,1810, John

Ferguson and Spouse Mary McIntyre in the village of Strathyre had a child baptised and named Colin. This Colin

died before 1814 but death records were not found.

+     3            ii.   John Fergusson, born November 26, 1811 in Perthshire, Scotland; died August 31, 1888 in Lanark Co. ON.

+     4           iii.   Colin Fergusson, born January 01, 1814 in Perthshire, Scotland; died in McVean's Cemetery Lanark Co. ON.

5           iv.   Duncan Fergusson, born January 13, 1816 in Perthshire, Scotland; died November 30, 1885 in Lanark Co. ON.  He married Maria Willoughby; born 1816 in Ireland; died November 04, 1909 in McVean's Cemetery, Numogate, Lanark Co. ON.

Notes for Duncan Fergusson:

1816 January 13, John Ferguson and spouse Mary McIntyre, Village of Strathyre [Scotland] had a child baptised

named Duncan LDS Film 0993518 Film # 458535.  "At rest died at Smiths Falls on Thursday, November 4, 1909,

Maria Willoughby, relict of the late Duncan Fergusson Sr. age 93 years. The Funeral will take place from her late

residence, Centre Street, at 2 o'clock on Friday afternoon to McVean's Cemetery, Numogate. Service at the

house at 1:30 o'clock." Duncan and Maria had no surviving children.

Laura Fergusson (Raeburn - Gibson) stated in her family records of the 1950's, " Duncan Fergusson married

Maria Willoughby and lived in Smith's Falls, Ontario. They had no children. The "little chair" I have in my home –

well over hundred years old -- once belonged to Aunt Maria. When my parents moved to Manitoba in 1881, my

mother had cane bottomed chairs. The women talked it over and Aunt Maria and mother traded chairs, thinking

that the handmade wooden chairs would be much stronger for maybe rough use in a pioneer home. They are as

good today as they were then." Duncan's father was John Fergusson who came to Canada about 1830 with sons

Duncan, Colin and Robert. Son, John II arrived a few years later.

Laura goes on to say that John was accompanied by his second wife Margaret ---called Granny Fergusson --- and

their four children, Christina (Kirsty), Archie, Tom and Dan.  This, however, cannot be right. The 1851 census

says the children by his second wife were all born in Montague Twp. and the last child of John Fergusson's 1st

marriage to Mary McIntyre was born in 1818 and the first child of his second marriage to Margaret McNee was

born 1832. Therefore it is more likely that they came to Canada about 1830 before the birth of their first child

- In fact it is very possible that John emigrated with his three eldest sons and met and married his second wife

here in Canada. There is a possibility that John I came to Canada with the other Fergussons, Margaret's family

of Fergusson Falls but he returned to Scotland as the children's baptisms by wife 1 appear in Scottish records.

1851 Census: Duncan Fergusson age 33,  b. Scotland married to Maria age 33, b. Ireland, living at Con. 1, Lot 2E,

Beckwith Twp. with no children listed. Duncan and Maria Fergusson nee Willoughby lived in Smith's Falls, ON. in

later life.

Franktown Cemetery, Beckwith Twp. Lanark Co. Ontario  Headstone reads: In memory of the 4 infant children of

Duncan and Maria Fergusson. This would fit with the probate papers found re: Duncan's will stating that his

nephew was to have a headstone installed for his deceased children. Con 1 Lot 2 is close to Franktown Cemetery.

attention. Did they all live together? George would be Maria’s brother.

Notes for John Fergusson:

1811 Strathyre, Perth Scotland, christening, LDS film # 458538 "November 26 John Ferguson, Schoolmaster of Strathire and Mary McIntyre his wife had a son baptised named John. "John stayed in Scotland and did not come to Canada with his father and step mother. He came at age 21 after completing his education so this would have been in 1832.

Laura (Fergusson) Raeburn - Gibson wrote: "John Fergusson came to Canada when he was 21 and for a time kept the Waterloo Hotel in the town of Perth. Then he bought a farm in Montague township, about 5 miles north of Smith's Falls, not far from 'Numegate'. The house was founded on a rock. In fact, the whole farm was. The cellar was blasted out of solid rock and on this was built a frame building which was painted barn red. It looks just the same today (1947). Around it were planted apple trees and lilacs and here he brought his bride, Margaret Fergusson, who lived at Fergusson's Falls near the town of Perth. Margaret Fergusson was the daughter of Craigdarroch Fergusson. This was about the year 1836."  Laura was fairly close 100 years later.

Notes for Sarah Victoria Foster:

Sarah Victoria Foster was baptized on April 2, 1848 by Rev. W.H. Williams. Her cousin William Jackson Foster

was baptized the same day. Wesleyan Methodist Baptisms, Reel 1,p. 675, Bathurst District, Montague Twp. born

August 24, 1847.  Sarah's Death registration states she was born Oct. 14, 1845 . We will use the date of birth

as stated on her baptismal record. The Fergusson Bible written after her marriage states:  b. 14 Oct. 1846 and

d. 8 Feb. 1934.  Her death registration shows b. 14 Oct. 1845 and d. 4 Feb. 1934. Her birth will be based on the

baptismal records supplied by her parents and the death date will be as written on the BC Death Registration.

Vol. 488 # 52204.  She is buried at Hatzic Cemetery, Mission City, BC. in plot 71, block 8. She died of apoplexy.

Sarah Fergusson's death records states she lived in BC. with Sadie and David for 20 years, the last 4 at the

Strachan residence in Dewdney, therefore she likely moved to BC. in 1914. Laura Raeburn Gibson wrote of her

prairie upbringing in Manitou, MB." After the death of her father John Fergusson, her mother Sarah, nee

FOSTER had to raise the family. Their uncles, Dick and Bill Foster helped out. Their farm was on the Indian trail

down into the Pembina Valley. The Indians would file along and come into the farm yard and sit down and wait.

They came on horse back with the men riding and the women and children walking. Poles, which dragged behind

the horses, carried their possessions. Sarah was a crack shot - she could bring down a pigeon in flight. She kept

her musket by the door and cooked a meal for the natives. They were polite and quiet as they ate and thanked

her. The gun made her feel better, for they would watch Laura with the fair curly hair and it made Sarah

nervous. They returned regularly for they knew she would be kind and indeed our mother's stories never made us

feel anything other than that the people were hungry. Laura personally felt a kindred spirit with these Indians

because of the tone of her mother's voice in the story telling. Sarah was a crack shot with a gun. She quickly got

rid of any hawks that molested her chickens or turkeys. When her husband was away, she kept the gun loaded by

the door as they did fear the Indians, especially when the second Riel Rebellion broke out near Saskatoon. The

"Commission Trail" passed their farm about a half mile off and they used to listen to the Indians moving along it

in their Red River carts. Later the road was made along the edge of their property. For more history see "Early

Life in McKenzie" page 275 by Sadie Strachan nee Fergusson.

John FERGUSSON was born Jan 1, 1841 at Con 7 Lot 21Part, Montague Twp.,Lanark Co. ON. He died at his farm

at NW 22-2-9 at Manitou near Snowflake in the McKenzie District of southern Manitoba. Sarah and John moved

west in 1881 to the McKenzie district from Smith's Falls, ON. with their children and with Sarah's mother

Sarah "Sally" Foster nee Finley and Sally's brother John Webster Finley. They came via Chicago, IL. and

Emerson, ND. by train, arriving in Emerson, MB. in March 1881. In the spring they travelled by sleigh and horses

to their farm at NW 22-2-9, McKenzie District near Manitou. Their first home was a sod house. John, a

Presbyterian, was well educated and active in the community. He was mourned by the whole area on his death and

he was spoken of as a great leader of the area. He was a Councilor for a long time and a Reeve for awhile. He was

the Justice of Peace for the district. He was active in the church and taught Sunday School. He donated the

land for the McKenzie Cemetery at NW 22-2-9 by 1885 according to his daughter Sadie Strachan.

Notes for Christian Fergusson:

Christian (Christianne in pronunciation) Fergusson, daughter of John Fergusson and Margaret  McNee married George Stewart of Smith Falls. George had emigrated to Canada with his parents (as a teenager--1838 ish) and two brothers, then another brother and sister were born in Canada. The Stewart boys all decided to move to North Dakota and a couple of the boys went down in 1879 and then the rest of the family moved in 1880. The old folks said they were too old to be moving again but the "kids" all insisted.  So the family moved again kit and caboodle this time to North Dakota.  The exception was their sister, Isabella, who moved to Michigan in 1883 with her husband Charlie Whiting. Christy went back to Lanark Co. several times to visit her folks.  During one of the visits one of her daughters died of diphtheria. The spelling of Fergusson with the two s's was something she emphasized.

Laura Raeburn Gibson wrote: Kirsty married George Richard Stuart (Stewart) We always called him Uncle Geordie. They lived near Grand Forks, North Dakota. The village nearby was Gilby. Their children were Jessie who died as a child, Margaret, Campbell and Nellie who were all married and lived in North Dakota.

Another Pioneer Passes Away

Grandma Stewart called home at the ripe age of seventy-seven. Again the Angel of Death has entered the community and taken one for whom we all mourn. On Thursday morning at two-thirty Grandma Stewart heard the call and after nearly seventy-seven years of love and service passed into the life beyond. Christian Ferguson was born in Montague, July 2, 1838. Her childhood was spent in Montague, Ont. In 1857 she was married to George Stewart of Beckwith, Ont. and they made their home near Smiths Fall, Ont, until 1880 when they came to North Dakota taking up a homestead seven miles west of Manvel. Here, theirs were the struggles of pioneers. Many stories of those days are told of the cheerful, happy home with its ever open door of generous hospitality to not only neighbors but strangers as well. They came to Gilby in 1888 and since the death of Mr. Stewart in 1906 she has made her home with her youngest son, C.C. Stewart until a couple of months ago. She was of a cheerful and contented mind, kind and helpful to all with whom she came in contact. Her life was as a benediction. She is survived by two sons and three daughters, Mrs. F. Jones of Bemidje, Minn. J.F. Stewart of Gilby, Mrs. J. Keenan of Tacoma Wash. Mrs. O.S. Lund of Honeyford and C.C. Stewart of Grand Forks. The funeral was held today at two o'clock from the house with services in the church at 3 o'clock. She was laid to rest in the Prairie Home Cemetery.
