Our Grandmother's great grandfather, Victor Ferguson, a blacksmith, was quietly shoeing a horse by the wayside under the shade of some large old oaks that grew near his shop. A party of dragoons came along near his shop under the command of the infamous Graham of Cleaverhouse. He inquired if he was Ferguson, the heretic. He replied that he worshiped God after the manner of his fathers. Graham ordered him to go into his shop a make a hook. He did so. They then told him to move a step-ladder against one of the trees, mount the ladder and drive the hook into a limb, telling two of his men to see that it was made fast. They then seized the blacksmith and thrust the hook into his neck and left him there. This was done in the presence of his unhappy wife, who stood in her doorway and witnessed the whole proceedings and had to hear the jeers and insults of a brutal soldiery. The wife soon escaped with her two sons, John and Victor, and a daughter, Sarah. A son of one of the brothers, [David Ferguson], married in the city of Londonderry, a Miss Clemence, a lady of rank and quality (Lady Clarissa Clemens). Her parents objected to the match, thinking that she degraded herself marrying a mechanic. David died soon after and left her with a young family. She had a high mind and independent spirit, so she adopted a plan few mothers have the courage to execute. Rather than apply to her relatives for assistance, she left her children in care of some friends. Then she passed over to Philadelphia, PA., where she applied her education to good purpose. She earned money by teaching embroidery, music" and painting. These were rare qualities in this country at that period. She sent back money and friends brought her children over. After educating her family in Philadelphia, she moved with them to KY. I showed this paper to the late Dr. Clements Ferguson of New Paris, Ohio. He shed many tears and said this was his mother.
