Fergus(s)on DNA Project Ferris of County Kerry, Ireland

Ferris - In Kerry a variant of O'Fergus. It is also traditionally a cognomen of a branch of the Moriartys. In Ulster it is the name of a branch of the Scottish clan Ferguson formerly MacFergus.

FERRIS

In 1613 Edward Southworth was granted landsof Daniel Mac Fearriss at Bealahamalis in Kilbanane, Ballymacpriorie in Killarglin, Bunglassie in Glanbehy, and Ceapinghucosy in Templenoe. In 1653 further confiscation and transplantation occurred against Murrough Mac Owen Ferris of Ballymalis, John Ferris of Dunkerron, and John Ferris of Ballymacprior.

In 1656 Sir Francis Brewster held the confiscated lands of Turlough MacOwen Ferris and leased Ballymalis castle and Culleenymore to Alex. Eagar, and they passed later to Col. Stokes. In 1799 Eugene Ferris was a tenant to the Eager family at Culleenybeg in Kilbanane. In 1796 Edward Ferris was an ensign in Col Conways Irish brigade.

Ballymalis Castle between Killarney and Killorglin, of Kilbonane parish was a Ferris stronghold confiscated in 1677, and granted to Sir Francis Brewster, who gave it to Alexander Eager. This castle appears to be a 15th century building. On the projection at the W. angle can be seen the Fleur de Lys cut in the supporting limestone corbels. The castle stands on a rising ground on the bank of the Launne, and was a frontier fort between the Geraldine and MacCarthy lands.
