There are two main groups of historical families of that name (Ferguson). Those in Lewis are generally reckoned to have come from the Brahan area of Easter Ross along with the MacKenzies in the early 1600s. Those in Harris and the Uists claim a much earlier origin, from a henchman of Robert Bruce who was in the islands in the period between being on Rathlin and the Battle of Bannockburn, linking this tradition with the fact that the name Robert was to be found in these Fergusons in much greater number than in any other family in the area.

Donald M. Ferguson 1922-

"The Fergusons first came from the mainland to the village of Ceòs in Lochs, Lewis. that's where they first got houses. They came here from the Black Isle in Inverness-shire. I believe that they were blacksmiths to trade and were brought to Lewis by MacKenzie of Seaforth when he took the island from the MacLeods"
