Sir Samuel Ferguson of Standingstone and Belfast

The Ferguson family came from Scotland early in the seventeenth century. They believed themselves to belong to one of the oldest of the Highland clans, " Mhic Fhearghuis " of Athole. The crests are identical—a Scottish thistle with a bee sucking honey from "the symbol dear." The motto is " Dulcius ex asperis" (sweeter on account of the asperities). The immediate progenitors of the Fergusons migrated to Antrim from south-western Scotland.

Notes by Lady Ferguson

Samuel Ferguson of Standingstone left to his six sons estates in the vicinity of the Sixmilewater which falls into Lough Neagh, near the town of Antrim. On the lands of Thrushfield, the estate of the eldest son William, stands the little town of Parkgate. Of the poetry of his descendant, Sir Samuel Ferguson :

'the great style of poetry, that style which is characterised by simplicity, breadth of effect, a careless strength full of movement and passion, imagination, vigour, an epic largeness of conception, wide human sympathies, vivid and truthful description.'
Aubrey de Vere
'the one Homeric poet of our time.'
W. B. Yeats
'Ferguson has reached heights which justly entitle him to rank as the National Poet of Ireland.'
Alfred P. Graves
the largo clear genius of the great Irish poet of our own century, who, moreover, is not merely Celtic-Irish, but Anglo-Irish,—poetry revealing in all its traits a nature of high distinction.'
T. W. Lyster

The Fergusons in Co. Antrim were originally Presbyterians; and Sir Samuel, in his ballad of 'Willy Gilliland,' included in Lays of the Western Gael, tells the story of a Covenanting ancestor who came to Ireland at the time of the persecutions in Scotland. Ellen GILLILAND, who married John FERGUSON, father of Samuel of Standingstone, and was great-grandmother of Sir Samuel, was descended from this hunted Covenanter. The burying- place of the family is at Donegore in Antrim; and the arms used by Sir Samuel FERGUSON were the three boars' heads, and the buckle, the crest, a thistle with a bee, and the motto Dulcius ex asperis.

The Fergusons of Fourmileburn seem always to have been members of the 1st Donegore (Presbyterian) Congregation (Parkgate). The records of this congreation previous to 1806 - as well as about 1830-60- have been lost; but during the years 1806-1830 various FERGUSONs of those given above appears as having been present at communion services. In 1821 a Dora FERGUSON of Fourmileburn was also present; and there is an entry of a Robert FERGUSON of Fourmileburn having been drowned at Belfast in January 1813.

In Donegore churchyard, among several graves of FERGUSON, is an old tombstone, with the arms three boars' heads and buckle, the crest, the bee and thistle, and the motto Dulcius ex asperis. The inscription is 'Here lyeth the body of Joseph FERGUSON, who died Jan. 30, 1773, aged 44 years, and 3 of his children.'
