Fergusson of Doonholm

In 1755 Doonholm was acquired by William Fergusson of London, a relation of the Fergussons of Castlehill. He was one of at least three Fergussons to hold the post Provost of Ayr. On his death in 1776 he left this property to his eldest daughter Elizabeth who in 1780 married Malcolm Fleming of Barochan. It was purchased by his nephew John Fergusson, merchant in Calcutta and was returned to the Flemings upon his death in 1790. Today the estate is owned by a Kennedy family.
Robert Burns', the poet, father William leased Mount Oliphant from William Fergusson, Provost of Ayr who lived nearby in the grander Mount Ferguson. William Burns served as the head gardener for William Fergusson.
William KELSO, Esq. of Dankeith, Major of the 23rd Light Dragoons, subsequently Col. of the Ayrshire Militia, Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for that county, who married 30 August 1784, Susanna, daughter of William FERGUSSON, Esq. of Doonholm, and had issue.
